Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete Review

By nation vengeance November 19, 2011

For those who played one of the best selling games in history, Final Fantasy VII, this movie will bring back many memories of playing the game, and may make some people (myself included) play the game in order to grasp what is happening in the story. I was pleasantly surprised the first time I saw this movie to realize it was completely CGI, so that Square Enix could make their characters appear the way they wanted to make them appear.

Advent Children takes place two years after the events of the original game and focuses on Cloud Strife, the protagonist of the game. For starters, when a meteor falls in the game and is stopped by the Lifestream, a side effect of the planet fighting back to protect itself was that it absorbed the mind of Sephiroth (the antagonist who summoned the meteor in the first place). Sephiroth's mind courses through the planet, infecting those who come into contact with the Lifestream. This disease is called Geostigma and has infected most of the people living in the city of Midgar.

The movie does a very good job of finishing what the game could not. The game does not resolve Cloud's conflicts, nor try to. In the movie, they are resolved by Cloud finally forgiving himself for the deaths of his two friends (which were not his fault by any means) and the pain of his friends who are still alive.

The music in the movie can be great, or just mediocre. The re-orchestrated music from the game is very good, and very nostalgic; whereas the music made for the movie is mediocre at best.

The action scenes are well done. Though still very reminiscent of the game, it entices you in a way the game cannot because you think "This is how Cloud would fight, he wouldn't stand there, waiting for his time meter to fill."

This movie made a great impression on me, and I still find references to the game that I missed before. I give it a 4.8 out of 5, the .2 deducted for the music and overuse of slow motion. I recommend Advent Children to anyone looking for an action movie to watch.
