The Upcoming Battlefield 3

By nation Apple July 22, 2011

Battlefield 3 is another first-person shooter video game under development by EA Digital Illusions CE, and everything from the game engine to marketing is aimed to kick things up a notch and take on the current industry-leading game, Call of Duty. "This November, we're launching Battlefield 3. It's going up against the next Call of Duty, which is presently the #1 game in the game industry," said John Riccitiello, CEO of EA. Battlefield 3 "is designed to take that game down." EA claims they have a superior product, and they apparently believe it because they've stated their intention to spend "a couple hundred million dollars" on marketing!

The twelve minute trailer above was posted on the game's Facebook page, and a version including a director's commentary was released following the game's one millionth Facebook "like." As of writing, the trailer has received 64,636 "likes" on YouTube and is constantly climbing each day.

Despite being titled Battlefield 3, the game is actually the eleventh installment of the Battlefield franchise. Battlefield 3's gameplay will feature battles that made the series extremely popular for single-player, co-operative and multiplayer modes. The missing elements in the Bad Company games will be reintroduce in Battlefield 3, such as fighter jets, ability to go prone, and 64-player battles on the PC. Battlefield 3's lead platform is the PC, not Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Because of the low player count on the consoles, EA will accommodate the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 by giving limited ground area, but the fly space will be the same. The Commander Mode feature most likely will not be included in the game.

For Multiplayer, Battlefield 3 features the return of class-based gameplay with Assault, Support, Engineer, and Recon. The Assault class is given the ability to equip defibrillators and medkits, unlike the previous versions. The Engineer class will be upgraded as well, given a flashlight to see better or, just for fun, blind enemy players.

A new engine called Frostbite 2 was designed specifically for Battlefield 3. With Frostbite 2, Battlefield 3 will be able to have better destruction, sound, and graphics than its predecessors. Frostbite 2 will make Battlefield 3 more realistic like you're actually there. EA will also be using its animation technology called ANT, the same one used in some EA Sports games, most notably FIFA. ANT allows the player to move into cover and turn his head first, instead of the whole body. ANT also allows the player to drag fallen comrades into safety and mount weapons on almost any part of the terrain.

At E3 2011 last month, EA announced an open beta testing of Battlefield 3 on the beginning of September 2011. Leaks from EA indicate that the DLC pack, "Back to Karkand," will become available for general purchasing after one month.
